Walk-in baths

A walk-in bath has a watertight door in the side and a built-in seat, so you step in at floor level, sit down, close the door and let it fill around you.

It suits people who cannot manage the side of a normal bath but still want a proper soak, for comfort, for stiff joints, or simply because they have always preferred a bath.

Is a walk-in bath right for you?

  • You enjoy a bath and would miss it, but stepping over the side is no longer safe.
  • You can sit on a seat at chair height and stand up from it with a rail to hold.
  • You are happy to sit in the bath while it fills and empties, which with a standard waste takes several minutes each way.
  • The bathroom has the usual bath space, about 1,500 to 1,700 mm long, or room for a compact model.

Think twice if

  • The user transfers from a wheelchair, or needs help from a carer to wash. A level access shower or wet room nearly always works better.
  • The water supply is slow or the hot water cylinder is small. A deep walk-in bath can need more hot water than a standard one, so ask the installer to check.

What a walk-in bath costs

National guide prices for supply and fitting, read November 2026. A walk-in bath with a sealable door is a mobility aid in HMRC’s rules: people aged 60 or over pay VAT at 5% on supply and fitting together, and a disabled person’s adapted bathroom work can be zero-rated (Notice 701/7, sections 6 and 9).

How a walk-in bath is fitted

  1. Survey

The fitter measures the bath space and the door, checks the water pressure and hot water supply, and helps choose between side and end doors.

  2. Old bath out

The old bath and its panel are removed and the floor checked. Walk-in baths are heavy when full, so the floor may need strengthening.

  3. New bath in

The bath is levelled, connected to the hot and cold supplies and the waste, and the door seal tested with a full fill.

  4. Finishing

Wall panels or tiles around the bath are made good, grab rails fixed, and the user shown how to use the door and controls safely.

What to check before you buy

  • Fill and empty times. You sit in the bath while it fills and drains. Ask for the real times with your water pressure, and whether a fast-fill tap or pumped drain is included.
  • Seat height and depth. Try it at a showroom or ask for the measurements. The seat should be about the height of a dining chair.
  • Door seal guarantee. The seal is the part most likely to wear. Find out how long it is guaranteed and what replacement costs.
  • The door side. Choose the side that suits the person’s stronger leg and the way they approach the bath.
  • A cold-water warning. As the bath empties you may feel cold. A heated seat or a hand shower helps.
  • Whether a shower would do. Many people choose a walk-in bath and later wish they had a shower. Be sure it is the soak you want, not just a way in.

Your questions answered

How much does a walk-in bath cost in the UK?

Typically £4,000 to £12,000 supplied and fitted. Compact and standard models sit at the lower end; powered seats, spa jets and fast-drain pumps take it to the top.

Do you pay VAT on a walk-in bath?

People aged 60 or over pay a reduced 5% rate when the bath is supplied and fitted together in their home. Where the bathroom is being adapted for a disabled person, the work can be zero-rated. See HMRC Notice 701/7.

How long does a walk-in bath take to fill?

Usually between about four and ten minutes, depending on the bath size and your water pressure. Fast-fill taps cut the time; draining is often slower unless a pump is fitted.

Can I get a walk-in bath on a Disabled Facilities Grant?

Occasionally, but most councils fund level access showers instead because they meet more needs. If you want a walk-in bath, raise it with the occupational therapist early.

Are walk-in baths a good idea for elderly people?

For the right person, yes: someone who loves to bathe and can sit through the fill and drain. For anyone who needs help washing or uses a wheelchair, a level access shower is usually the safer choice.
